With PPC's years of 'learning by doing' with regards to community radio's role in this critical aspect of Disaster Management, here, we share an indicative mapping of community needs and appropriate community radio based activities, in the way we look to address them in pre, during and post-disaster situations:
I. Pre disaster and awareness building around
Risk Reduction
practical solutions in construction (including a disaster resilient CR station as an example for all), farming, environmental preservation, infrastructure development, water conservation, sanitation, civic sense and hygiene etc.
Disaster Preparedness
tips and tools, including inculcating the critical habit of listening to your CR station for timely, accurate and life saving information; early weather warning information and simple technologies; understanding of your region through laser terrain mapping, community walks with experts to identify high and low risk areas etc.

II. During a disaster and kicking into action with
Rescue
including deploying Emergency Radio in a Box [critical for the first 30 days post a natural disaster]; use of available low and hi-tech solutions such as Wi-Fi and/or V-sat, solar power back ups, wind up radios; connecting lost and found via a broadcasting CR stations
Relief Systems
announcing emergency drops of food and drink, air-lifts to safety, safe homes etc.
III. Post the disaster and disaster impact reduction
Quick Recovery
through a joint coordinated effort of all stakeholders across the board and the sharing of relevant information and engagement around the same
Rehabilitation
building awareness around government and agency rehabilitation work and the CR station collaborating wherever possible. Psycho social support and trauma management continues, with the support of professionals
Responsible Reconstruction of Lives and Livelihoods
CR supporting these initiatives through timely and accurate information sharing, community organising and community voice, in order to truly complete this community driven approach to disaster management
